China: Rijk Zwaan opens R&D center in Jimo city

Rijk Zwaan, the world's top seed company from Netherlands, is going to build its Agricultural Scientific Research Center near Dagu River near Yifengdian town. Within 4-6 years, the company plans to launch a top level vegetable R&D center that can reach the whole of Asia.

"After over 3 years' planing and procedure application, this project is finally initiated,"explained Mr. Wang Haigang, the Secretary of Party Committee from Yifengdian town in Jimo city. The vegetable R&D center covers an area of 32 hectares, and it will build the following facilities: office buildings, experts' apartment area, modern molecular biology Laboratory, insect pathology laboratory, cell biology laboratory, seed storage, packaging and processing room, the modern intelligence glassroom, sunlight glassroom and multi span greenhouse etc.

Vegetable seeds, such as tomatoes, eggplants, paprika, chili peppers, cucumber, and spinage etc, the majority of which have been in a leading position in the Chinese market. For example, its Brigitte eggplant seeds can help the per mu (around 0.07 hectare) cultivation volume increase from 6,000 kilos to 20,000 kilos, which can further enhance per mu revenue of over 10,000 Yuan. Only by introducing this vegetable variety, can extra revenue of 0.2 billion Yuan be gained by Shandong eggplant growers, as each year around 200,000 growers plant the Brigitte eggplant variety.
