Export of Chinese pear variety to Austria

China: Organic pears grown on fermented eggs?

“Last year we launched a pear export programme from China to Austria. We have a company in Europe that is part of our corporate umbrella organisation. Our first clients were enthusiastic about our pear variety. We now grow three different pear varieties in Shandong: the Snow White organic pear (Chinese name: Yang Zhi Qiu Xiang), the Fengshui pear and the Huangjin (Golden) pear. We planted the Snow White pear just for the export market. The Snow White variety is a Chinese pear variety, the second and third varieties are Korean pear varieties. We started to plant the Snow White pear on two hundred hectares in 2011, a year after our company was launched. Our orchards are located near the city of Qingdao, in Shandong province.” The company cooperates with Qingdao Agricultural University, Shandong Agricultural University and Taiwan University.

“We selected to work with the White Pear pear variety because if the fruit is very tasty and its quality holds well during transport; it is a strong variety. The skin has a beautiful, even quality. The variety is available from October until May the year after. We are an international company and we are now present in four countries. We are trying to gain increased international presence. Our team is visiting the Fruit Logistica exhibitions in Germany and Hong Kong in an attempt to meet new clients. Our clients in Europe are mainly supermarkets. For the international market we registered an international brand name O’Natur.”

Chinese pear market expected to recover
“The Chinese fresh produce market experiences a number of difficulties. Some practises within the industry, including transport within China and cold storage facilities, are not optimising the quality of the product. Preserving fresh produce can be a challenge. These problems have partly led to last year’s low pear prices. Big parts of last year’s crop suffered from quality issues, which is why they could not be sold at market prices. We are trying to beat the market in the sense that we have invested in premium, organically grown, varieties. We sell our prices on the domestic market in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. We expect this year’s pear prices to be higher than last year’s. ”
