Japanese produce retail: extreme prices and rare varieties

While we were in Japan to visit the biannual GPEC Greenhouse Horticulture & Plant Factory Exhibition Conference in Tokyo, we also found some time to visit several retailers, local groceries and wholesale markets to take a look at the current offerings of fresh produce.

We saw a variety of products on offer, in most cases all of the fruit and vegetables were in good shape; we did not see many damaged or dirty products. Many of the fruits are offered in single foam protected packaging, and other bunch products are mostly pre-packed at the farms or distribution center.

Most of the products offered in the Japanese supermarkets are locally grown, and prices are stable and reasonable. However, some fruits, like strawberries, bell peppers, melons and mangoes are still hard-to-grow luxury products with pretty high prices; where else would you pay 29 euros for a watermelon or €1.45 for a single strawberry?

Some other highlights: Japanese basil and ginger, many microgreens and even cucumber lollypops and ice cold tomatoes on the rocks!
