India: Opportunities for horticulture in the state of Gujarat

Gujarat state is a major contributor to the Indian economy. This is the outcome of a recent worldwide market study on the competitiveness of countries and regions.

Their are mainly opportunities in the following expertise areas: seeds, fertilizer, machines for potato production and processing, cold storage and transport and post-harvest technology and equipment.

Agricultural and dairy sector
Agriculture, horticulture and dairy are flourishing industries in Gujarat. Cotton, peanuts, dates, sugarcane, milk and milk products are the main products. Rice, wheat, sorghum, millet, tur (legumes) and chickpeas are also grown in Gujarat. The vegetables mostly grown are onions, potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, okra and pumpkin.

This state is the main producer of onions, tomatoes, bananas, potatoes and pomegranates in India. Gujarat also produces spices like cumin, fennel and garlic. More than half of the land area of Gujarat is agricultural land.
