Emergent Coils donates aquaponics greenhouse for Chinese orphans

The orphans at Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village in Tianjin, China will have organic produce to eat throughout the year thanks to a donation of equipment and expertise by Emergent Coils. Shepherd’s Field was in need of new HVAC equipment for its greenhouse. Emergent Coils stepped in to design the whole heating and cooling system, including shade cover, fans, proper ventilation, and swamp cooler. The company is also designing insulation for the water supply to ensure proper heating in the winter. After the design is completed, volunteers from Emergent Coil will install the new equipment.

Shepherd’s Field has as many as 150 children of all ages with special needs living onsite. Children at Shepherd’s Field receive the medical care and therapy they desperately need, with more than half receiving therapy in fine motor skills, gross motor skills, or speech.

“Our children have really benefited from the generous gifts and support of the people at Emergent Coils for our aquaponics greenhouse. They even volunteered to install the new heating and cooling equipment, which has greatly improved the system’s production. Their selfless acts of kindness have helped our children to not only eat healthy organic vegetables, but to provide a place where they can learn about caring for plants and fish. Our kids’ lives are much improved as a result of their bigheartedness,” said Timothy Baker, founder of Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village.

The greenhouse provides a great educational and therapeutic environment for the kids. In addition to learning about plants and watching them grow, children can learn basic life skills while working in the garden, such as responsibility, cooperation, communication, problem solving, self-confidence, and a feeling of accomplishment. The garden even acts as a sensory playground, offering the kids new opportunities to see, smell, taste and touch different plants on a regular basis.

“Shepherd’s Field takes in orphans with special needs from around China. We want to make sure these kids have fresh fruits and vegetables to eat throughout the year,” said Tommy Thompson, vice president of sales for Emergent Coils.

Shepherd’s Field is also building a new vocational center to make sure children over the age of 14, who are no longer eligible for adoption, receive job skills training to become self-sufficient after they age out of the system. Once the vocational center is completed, Shepherd's Field will be the largest facility of its type in all of Mainland China.
