Breadcrumbs from vegetable remnants

ORFI-Food from Groningen has received a grant of 50,000 euros for the production of an alternative for traditional breadcrumbs based on vegetable remnants, so-called 'veggie-coatings'. The vegetable remnants will be mixed, compressed, dried, and crumbled, thus creating an alternative for breadcrumbs. 

The product has been tested successfully and is being produced in a new company in Leek. At the end of this year, the production will start with four employees. ORFI-Food aims to increase this number to twenty, within a few years. 



Veggie-coatings

Veggie-coatings are sustainable because the vegetable remnants are not fermented or made into cattle feed, but instead they are used directly as a food product. Moreover, the production of alternative breadcrumbs costs less energy than traditional breadcrumbs. 

Promotion sustainability
The grant has come from the Program Innovative & Sustainable MKB Groningen-2 that is operative since March 2015. This program is used by the province Groningen to promote innovation and sustainability in small and medium enterprises. 2.4 million euros is in total available for projects.
