Evergreen Farm:

Ambitious Finnish vertical farm aims to supply export markets

A new Finnish start up is planning construction of a large vertical indoor farm in May 2017. Led by managing director and founder Ali Amirlatifi, Evergreen Farm's big plans for the production of food crops in a closed environment start with the realization of a 12,000 square meter production facility in the city of Nokia, in the South of Finland.

Evergreen Farm will use a multilayer vertical farming system that was invented by Amirlatifi himself. This patented production technology features a combination of misting irrigation (aeroponics) and stone wool substrates to grow short crops such as leafy greens, culinary herbs, strawberries and low bush blueberries.

The group operated a pilot project that was supported by the Finnish Ministry of Natural Resources and University of Contemporary Technology, in which scientists provided expertise on growing, plant testing and reporting on the new system. They are now backed by government funding, bank loans and private investment to deploy their farming system on a large scale.

Modular recirculation

According to Amirlatifi, the Evergreen Farm's growing system is much safer than current hydroponic and aeroponic vertical farming systems due to the modular design. "After taking a closer look at the problems that occur in current vertical farms, we have designed a fully closed loop production system that consists of self sustaining modular technologies in order to prevent transmission of diseases across the farm. If diseases or problems occur in the production of a crop, it is not possible to transmit these to a different crop or module on the farm."

As well as this, Evergreen Farm will introduce a new type of lighting source for their operation. "The lighting is also developed especially for this farm, we use vertical farming luminaries which are not producing any heat."

Scale up globally

Amirlatifi is confident about Evergreen Farm's patented vertical farming system; he plans to roll out the design over the entire world. "We will start with a few farms in Finland first, but even before we got started, we had already received interest and letters of intent from many investors in Africa, the UAE, Egypt, Macedonia and The United States.''

Evergreen Farm aims to establish 10 projects in Finland. They have the intention to export the output, only 35% of the output will be marketed via local channels, which is remarkable. "We see good chances for our strawberry crops as we will be able to produce high quality fruits year round. We believe that 10 of our farms can outperform the entire production from open field strawberry growers in Huelva, Spain."

Besides growing greens, herbs and berries, Evergreen Farm also patented a system to grow other crops like wheat, potatoes, carrots and other row crops in a multilayer setting. "We have designed a cropping schedule that increases the production of these crops significantly, allowing five harvest rounds per year, producing much more with a lower square meter footprint than current agriculture."

Evergreen Farm will present their solution at the upcoming GFIA 2017 Europe convention in Utrecht.
