More conventional farmers using organic fertilizers

As conventional farmers are becoming more aware of the benefits of integrated organic growing practices, the demand for organic fertilizers and crop protection increases every day. This is also noted by Michael LaBelle of MightyGrow, a manufacturer of organic fertilizers that is increasingly shipping its products to both organic and conventional growers.

MightyGrow develops and manufactures OMRI listed organic fertilizers which are made of all natural fully processed poultry litter with beneficial microbes and added trace minerals. According to MightyGrow's founder LaBelle, the fertilizers are popular even among conventional growers who want to reduce the use of more expensive synthetic fertilizers, as they can be easily integrated in their nutrient schemes.

"A lot of conventional greenhouse growers now use our fertilizers because they work, not for any other reason", LaBelle said. "Most of the horticultural growers are blending our organic mixes with their conventional sulfur coated urea and other slow release fertilizers. By adding an organic fertilizer, the efficiency of the synthetic fertilizer is increased because a carbon source is added."

LaBelle explained that they ran several extensive trials with U.S. greenhouse growers in order to support them with the integration and optimization of their fertilizer schemes. "The trials with our organic fertilizers at local nurseries resulted in better root growth in container grown plants. They cultivated healthier plants but also decreased their fertilizer expenses by 6-7 cent per 1 gallon pot. That is a lot of money when you produce 3 million plants per year."

According to LaBelle, the key to the success of MightyGrow's fertilizers are the added trace minerals and the microbial mix. Not only are many organic row crop growers using it as their main fertilizer, but also more and more vegetable growers. "Among our customers are also conventional string bean farmers as well as tomato growers. They love the product as they got better germination and more standardized growth of their plants which were grown in low EC soils."

And for the past few years, MightyGrow has begun to supply a relatively new industry: the organic medical marijuana market. “In the cannabis industry there is a huge demand for more sustainable and organic production methods. Lately some growers of organic medical marijuana are achieving good results with our fertilizers in soilless potting mixtures too."

While MightyGrow's organic fertilizers are mainly distributed to the U.S. and Canada, LaBelle said that he has noticed an increase in demand for his products from other countries too. "We are receiving international interest in the products and we have already shipped some fertilizers to banana plantations in Belize. We are currently searching for distributors and agents outside the United States to increase our activities abroad and overseas."
