AOP Luce ready for the 2016 tomato campaign

The A.O.P. Luce tomato campaign has almost reached its peak as many of the La Flacca PO members have started production. They are located in the plain between Fondi and Sperlonga, characterised by a unique microclimate and sandy soils.

The harvesting of red tomatoes (mainly Piccadilly, cherry, date and bunch tomatoes) started ten days ago, while green oblong tomatoes have been available for a month.

Even though weather conditions have not been ideal in the last few months, which have been particularly humid and rainy, the soil and weather conditions of the area, which is located by the sea and is well ventilated, limited the spreading of diseases that may have affected the quality of the product.

"Quality is good and pigmentation is excellent. Quantities should exceed those of 2015 by at least 5% and we have organised ourselves so as to avoid productive peaks or drops," explains AOP Luce president Felice Petrillo.

While 2015 was a good year for Piccadilly tomatoes, which tolerated the high temperatures and set well, bunch tomatoes did not perform as well and quantities were slightly below average.

Production follows integrated control regulations and holds the GlobalGAP certification. 90% is destined to retailers, of which 20% is sold abroad (mainly Germany) and 70% in Italy. The remaining 10% is destined to traditional retailers and the processing sector.
