Alejandro Moreno, Exportadora e Importadora JJLE SAS:

"We want to turn Colombia into a cherry tomato producer"

If we talk about the production of cherry tomatoes, we tend to think of a number of countries, but Colombia is not on the list of potential exporters of this vegetable. A group of growers from this South American country aims to change this mindset and turn Colombia into a source for the product. "So far, our nation has only exported to nearby islands, but with very small volumes. We want to be pioneers in exporting to Europe, meeting all certifications and requirements necessary to enter this market," affirms Alejandro Moreno, of Exportadora e Importadora JJLE SAS.

"The reason why no exports of this product have been made so far is the fact that not many advisers have been ready to help growers throughout the certification and export processes. In the specific case of cherry tomatoes, we have created an association of 10 producers, with a total of 40 hectares ready for the cultivation of more than 10 tonnes per month. The certification process is underway, so within two months maximum we'll be able to supply our product to the international market," assures Moreno.

Colombia is growing steadily, both in the production of agricultural products and in the export of these; associations are starting to be created for the purpose of seeking mutual support and stability for the grower. "The goal is to give producers peace of mind and stability with a very high quality product. Our farming is 95% organic and, given that it takes place in greenhouses, we schedule them to ensure there is a constant production all year round. Thus, we guarantee an income for producers and their labourers, as well as a stable and profitable supply for importers," concludes the representative.
