Canada: Produce industry people ride for a cause

On June 11 and 12, a team of EarthFresh employees participated in a two-day major cycling event called “The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer”, benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research hospitals in the world. The team name was called the "Fresh Ones", and all team members were part of the the potato and fresh produce business.

“We decided to devote our time and energy time to a charity-based event to help raise money for an illness that has touched all of our lives in some way,” noted Stephanie Cutaia, marketing director for EarthFresh Foods. “All the proceeds go to Princess Margaret to support cancer research, treatment, and services. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is Canada's leading comprehensive institution devoted to cancer research and care, and the work they're doing is leading-edge.”

Each rider committed to raise at least $2,500 and collectively the team raised $60,000.

“It was a tough ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls covering 200 kilometers and I will say it was not easy. We faced long roads, high winds, heat and hills but that is nothing compared to battling cancer,” said Cutaia. “Along the way we rode alongside people riding in honor of lost loved ones as well as Cancer survivors. It was such an uplifting experience. The Ride is about camaraderie, teamwork and passion all of which our Team showcased over the weekend.

“Research at the National Cancer Institute of Canada show 171,000 estimated new cases of cancer in Canada this year and 75,300 estimated deaths from cancer in Canada this year. That's why we rode. To do something big about cancer.”
