Novelties on display at Rijk Zwaan's Trial Center Tomato

Rijk Zwaan’s Trial Center Tomato in Holland is always packed with new breeds and innovations. While the doors were opened during the tomato demo day on June 16, you can still visit the trials by appointment.

For years Rijk Zwaan has opted for one central location where customers can see, taste and judge the full range of tomatoes. At the Trial Center Tomato detailed crop registration takes place of quality, taste and production. Ben Zwinkels takes us through a number of breeds.

72-195 RZ F1 is a new plum tomato that stands out because of its taste. Rijk Zwaan is currently running 20 trials worldwide with this vatiety

72-190 RZ F1 has been given the name Ternetto RZ F1. Ben Zwinkels: "The breed has been number one in England for years. Ternetto RZ F1 is more productive than the standard and retains its shape well." Rijk Zwaan has high hopes for this breed next year.

Middle segment - The 72-396 RZ F1l the crop is strong and productive and the fruit retains a good taste.

Paulanca RZ F1 is Rijk Zwaan’s fine beef steak tomato. This breed is particularly popular in Belgium and Eastern Europe. The crop remains short and that is advantageous in terms of labor intensity. Paulanca RZ F1 is suitable for both lit and unlit cultivation.

It is expected that the name for 72-760 RZ F1, which has already been applied for, will become known this year. This tomato falls in the coarse truss segment. There are already several trials, both lit and unlit. Ben Zwinkels: "We see a lot of positive results in these trials. Production is good, green parts remain attractive and the color is nice.

Forticia belongs to the truss middle segment. The average fruit weight is 110-130 g. The crop is highly generative and has a bit of a longer leaf.

Volicia also falls under the truss middle segment. It is a solid open crop with horizontal leaf. The breed is suitable for unlit cultivation.
