US: Aquaponic workshops at Texas A&M AgriLife today!

As a follow-up to last year’s introductory course, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Nueces and San Patricio counties has scheduled a workshop, Aquaponics 206: Building the System, from 1-4 p.m. June 21.

It will be held at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 10345 State Highway 44 in Corpus Christi.

“Anybody interested in starting their first aquaponics project can attend this workshop and learn about and construct an aquaponics system,” said Jason Ott, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources in Nueces County.

The fee of $30, payable at the door, will include the chance to win an assembled backyard aquaponics system, Ott said.

“Aquaponics is a closed system method of growing plants in a symbiotic relationship with fish,” he explained. “The fish waste feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water that sustains the fish.”

Ott said the workshop will help participants gain insight into how to design and manage their own backyard aquaponics system.

Peter Woods, an AgriLife Extension fisheries specialist in College Station, will lead the workshop through various topics of interest, including system design and terminology.

“Woods will also lead participants through the actual step-by-step construction of a backyard system,” Ott said. “And via a drawing at the conclusion of the workshop, one lucky participant will win the honor of taking this assembled aquaponics system home.”

Woods will also share his firsthand knowledge of managing an aquaponics system, Ott said.

“Peter and his family have been actively engaged in managing their own aquaponics gardening system for several years and they market much of their own produce at local gardener markets,” he said.

Seating is limited to the first 30 participants, so Ott encourages those wishing to attend to RSVP by June 20 by visiting or calling the AgriLife Extension office for Nueces County at 710 E. Main St. in Robstown. To RSVP and for more information, call 361-767-5223.
