Russia: Growers fight crazy roots and fusarium with hydrogen peroxide and colloidal silver

One of the major challenges in Russian vegetable production is fighting pathogenic microorganisms and diseases with efficient products without damaging the environment. Using plant protection products that are safe for the crops and environment is priority in the high-tech horticulture industry in Russia.

Ramon Agro from Moscow has introduced Intra Hydrocare in the Russian horticulture sector as a strong but environmentally friendly disinfectant. Intra Hydrocare is based on 50% hydrogen peroxide and colloidal silver. This combination makes Hydrocare a very strong biocide which leaves no toxic residues. Bacteria and fungi can efficiently be eliminated and after reaction of the hydrogen peroxide only water and oxygen will remain as residues. The small amount of silver stabilises the hydrogen peroxide and therefore Hydrocare claims to be many times stronger in comparison with ‘normal’ hydrogen peroxide.

The Michurinsk State Agrarian University has conducted efficacy studies with Intra Hydrocare. The experiments were done in the University laboratory and in greenhouses in order to prove the biocidal effect of Hydrocare in theory and in practice.

In this study the sensitivity of Fusarium (Fusarium oxysporum), Kladosporioza (Cladosporium fulvum), bacterial tomato cancer (clavibacter michiganensis) and ‘Crazy Roots’ (Agrobacterium Rhizogenes) to Intra Hydrocare was investigated. The experiment showed that treatment of these micro-organisms and its spores with a 1.0% and 0.2% Hydrocare solution, dosages for empty greenhouses, was effective. This treatment lead to complete elimination of all the mentioned microorganisms.
The same tests in greenhouse conditions also showed elimination of the mentioned microorganisms. Tests samples were taken from the irrigation system, air outlets and greenhouse surfaces. Hydrocare also efficiently eliminated the pathogens in practical circumstances.

Microbiological analysis

The efficacy of Intra Hydrocare in irrigation water is extensively tested by analysis of water samples on the presence of bacteria and fungi. Chlorine and chlorine dioxides are not efficient in cleaning of irrigation systems. The biofilm (layer of dirt/pollution on the inside of the pipelines) is not removed by chlorine and therefore bacteria and fungi can grow rapidly in irrigation water systems.

The disinfecting power of ‘normal’ hydrogen peroxide is low and not efficient in low concentrations. Bacteria and especially fungi will develop in the irrigation water. Fungi will cause damage above 20 cfu/ml and bacteria will cause damage above 500.000 cfu/ml.

Low concentrations of 40 ppm Hydrocare (40 ml per 1000 litres of water) are efficient in elimination of bacteria and fungi. This microbiological analysis is performed at the Intracare laboratory in the Netherlands and shows that Hydrocare will improve the water quality to a level which is safe for a successful cultivation.
