US: Lettuce demand increasing as summer starts

Just as January and New Year’s resolutions bring an increased demand in lettuce and healthy eating, June and the start of summer mirrors that same trend, according to Brian Cook of Hollandia Produce in Carpinteria, California.

“We’ve seen lettuce remain popular in January and it peaks again in June as summer starts. Healthy living trends are also contributing to the new usages of lettuce-like wraps. We’ve seen the shift from iceberg to romaine over the years and I can see the next generation adopting their own favorite lettuce,” said Cook.

Hollandia Produce specializes in hydroponically, greenhouse grown green and red butter lettuce packaged under their Live Gourmet label. The lettuce is live, as the roots are still attached.

“The roots allow for a better eating experience for consumers and less waste for the restaurants,” detailed Cook, adding that customers are increasingly drawn to these types of products.

“Consumers are learning more about sustainable growing and are continually looking for options that fall under this category. Retailers can really capitalize on this trend by providing consumers a destination for sustainably grown products,” explained Cook, who also noted the benefits of growing lettuce inside.

“While greenhouse growing protects us from most external concerns, we still have a challenge with Mother Nature. Growing is an art and we are always fine-tuning our skills to assure the most consistent, reliable eating experience year-round.”
