Turkish growers improve production and efficiency to counter crisis

While the Turkish industry is currently suffering from Russian import bans, greenhouse growers are nonetheless realizing the need for improvement and doing all they can to search for new markets and optimize there operations.

Sultan Sera was established in Aydin in 2010-2011 with a first phase of 4,5 hectares of modern Venlo greenhouses. Right now the high tech greenhouse company is preparing a phase II expansion of 3,8 hectares. In order to streamline the production and daily management, the company works closely with the consultants at Delphy Turkey.

Delphy consultant Ibrahim Yilmaz was closely involved in order to improve cultivation, cropping and management strategies. And not without result; the grower is expecting to harvest a record winter production yield of 40-41 kilograms per square meter. A record compared with standard Turkish winter production of TOV's, which is usually around 30 Kg/m2.

According to Yilmaz, Sultan Sera achieved the higher yields by taking a closer look at the climate strategies. "We optimized the growing conditions of the crops by implementing better heating and irrigation strategies. We created a well thought out climate strategy with multiple periods such as morning dips and pre-night settings. We translated this practical knowledge into the daily strategy of the head grower, who is now able to grow a stronger and more vital crop, and achieve good quality and higher yields.

But the production and quality are not the only things the Delphy consultants have been working on. "We also streamlined the labour at the operation. We provided small 1 to 1 trainings with the motivated production manager Mr. Ceyhun Cihan and his staff, teaching them not only how to work faster, but also how to work more ergonomically and get less tired from the tasks carried out.''

The optimized labour management resulted in huge savings for Sultan Sera. They are now able to run the 4,5 hectare of glasshouse with only 22 employees instead of 30 employees.

Now that Sultan Sera is getting the most out of their production by producting the highest quality yields against the lowest production costs, the grower is ready for the future. According to Yilmaz, they are looking at new markets in the Middle East as an alternative to the Russian market. "General manager Mrs Neslihan Budalki designed dedicated packaging, boxes and a new quality brand name in order to distinguish the product on the market. From now on the tomatoes from Sultan Sera will be visible in the market under the Tomatolia premium brand.
