Sharp increase in Ukrainian blueberry production
In the coming season, Ukraine could sharply increase the supply of blueberries. Tatiana Getman, head of the project ‘’APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits’’ stated this in her speech at the Seventh International Conference "Berries of Ukraine - 2016: Frozen and Fresh Markets".
"Blueberries have the greatest rate of growth in production in the soft fruit sector globally. In Ukraine, in 2015 the gross harvest of blueberries was 1,000 tons, while in 2016, according to forecasts it could reach 1,300-1,500 tons. The area of commercial blueberry farms is rapidly increasing: today they are estimated to cover 1,000 ha. This is 1.5 times larger than the area under raspberries. Moreover, plantings of blueberries made 3-4 years ago in Ukraine are now coming into fruition. Thus, the supply of these products in Ukraine in the near future may increase dramatically,’’ said the expert.
According to Getman, a sharp increase in the production of blueberries, as well as competition from cheaper blueberries will lead to the price of these products reducing by at least 20 percent in the coming season.
