US: $1.9m fruit, veg grants for Idaho schools

Grants of more than $1.9 million are set to be shared out between 104 schools across Idaho. The money is to be used to provide school children with fruit and vegetables as snacks.

The federal government’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grants will allow the schools to offer free mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks to their students.

“Focusing on increasing students’ consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables will positively impact student health, and will ultimately support overall student wellness,” state superintendent Sherri Ybarra said in a news release Friday 20 May.

The grant period runs from July 1 through June 30, 2017.
