CA: Ontario propagator Roelands Plant Farms growing again

Due to the continuing demand for premium quality greenhouse seedlings, Canada’s newest vegetable plant propagation greenhouse is expanding again.

Opened in 2013, Roelands Plant Farms saw an expansion from its original four-acre size to its current eight-acre size in 2015, and has yet again identified the need for additional space. This phase of construction will bring the propagator to a total of 12 acres of growing space.

Demand for plants has far outpaced the expectations of greenhouse owners, Adrian and Jodi Roelands. They attribute this to the health of the greenhouse vegetable sector in general, but also in large part to the quality of plants and exceptional customer service they provide.

“We involve customers at every stage of the growing process, communication of factors that might affect their plants is huge for us. We also hold annual delivery dates open for customers year after year. We don’t switch dates unless asked to by the grower,” says Adrian Roelands.

They also have a policy of avoiding any non-vegetable plant production at their greenhouse. Rather than opening up to flowers growing contracts during the off-season, they only produce hydroponic lettuce alongside their vegetable seedlings. This drastically reduces pest and disease pressure within the facility.

The new greenhouse design will follow the previous two phases, which consists of 7-metre high glass Venlo style roof, concrete flood-floors, grow lights over the entire growing space and adjustable grow pipes and in-floor heat.

Construction will be carried out by South Essex Fabricating, and will be completed by the fall of 2016.
