US (IL): Hydroponic greenhouse for Herscher High School

Looking to improve agricultural education, Herscher High School next year will debut a modern greenhouse. According to an article on the Daily-Journal, Eighty members of the school's Future Farmers of America club raised $50,000 in less than a year through local donations and grants. Last week, the school board gave them $50,000 more to build the 1,225-square-foot detached greenhouse.

The new greenhouse will feature a hydroponics system, which will enable students to grow plants with just water. That system will connect to a 500-gallon fish tank full of tilapia, whose waste will fertilize the plants. It also will have a drainage system built into its concrete floor.
