Opportunities for hydro- and aquaponics in Egypt

The agricultural office of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, in close cooperation with DGAGRO of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, has been developing a program on agrologistics in Egypt since June 2012. The program targets the improvement of food security and the reduction of post-harvest losses in Egypt. It aims at implementing pilot projects applying Dutch technology and systems with a combined Dutch-Egyptian consortium in a local setting.

As a part of the program, researchers from Wageningen University Research Centre (WUR) in the Netherlands conducted an objective and independent study for the Embassy of the Netherlands on setting up a supply chain concept in Egypt.

The findings and conclusions are described in the report “Opportunities for hydro- and aquaponics in Egypt” (attachment below). In addition, the report includes an indicative business case for which the researchers have looked into tomato, the most commonly consumed vegetable crop in Egypt, as well as into leafy vegetables, which are currently the main products on hydroponic production basis in Egypt.
