"See, experience and taste the best from the neighborhood"
NL: De Bakker Westland launches ‘Lokaal Westland'
Why are we horticulturalists? And how do we want to make a difference? That was the question Bart and Roel de Bakker of Bakker Westland nursery asked themselves last summer. It resulted in the new concept ‘Lokaal Westland’. Roel de Bakker: "As a nursery we’re expanding our focus beyond trading houses and retail. We want to be an added value for the consumer as well. That’s why we are opening our doors so the origin of Westland products can be experienced."
It means that lovers of Westland fruit and vegetables have freely been able to order neighborhood products since April 16th, when the tomato nursery in Kwintsheul launched the new concept: Lokaal Westland. These are wooden boxes full of Westland vegetables, related accessories and vine tomatoes that you order online and pick up at the grower’s.
Webshop with local products
Through the webshop on www.lokaalwestland.nl different types of ‘Bakkies Westland’ are available: a wooden box full of tomatoes, zucchinis, eggplants, strawberries, lettuce, radishes, peppers and other local regional products.
Special pick-up place
The Bakkies Westland can be collected as of April 23rd at tomato nursery De Bakker Westland. There’s a special place in the greenhouse at Bovendijk 67a in Kwintsheul: a ‘Tomato Tavern’. Here customers can enjoy a bowl of fresh tomato soup, marvel at 60,000 m2 of tomatoes and obtain their Bakkie Westland.
Tomato as pickles
There is also an added value for early tomato plant dropouts. Bart de Bakker: "Tomatoes that don’t belong to quality grade 1 because of handling or damage are given a second chance as high-end tomato soup. Tomatoes that fall from the vine early and are still a bit pale also get a second chance. By preserving them in sweet and sour juice they thrive as refreshing pickles. Nice during cocktail hour, in a salad or as a snack. Potted pickled tomatoes are also available through the webshop."
Bakkie Westland
In the meantime Bakkie Westland has become a household name in the region. That's also because of ‘Bakkie Fietsen', a concept whereby people can discover the Glass City on bicycles, visit a greenhouse and collect fruit and vegetables in their own wooden box. Roel de Bakker: "The neighborhood has received all of these products with great enthusiasm. That’s why we decided to combine these goodies from Westland and offer them under the name Lokaal Westland through the webshop www.lokaalwestland.nl. It stands for tasting, looking and experiencing. We invite everyone to take a look at the webshop and visit the Tomato Tavern to get a Bakkie Westland."'
