Wild Cucumber well received after reintroduction
In 2008 Eosta won the silver medal with the Wild Cucumber, or UrGurke. For years it remained quiet regarding this forgotten type of cucumber, but after tests conducted last year this innovation is now back. “The market was ready for it in 2008, but when we started cultivating this strain large-scale, we ran into the customary cultivation problems. It was purely a matter of cultivation. The strain has now been further developed and we can serve the market again,” Michaël Wilde of Eosta explains.
According to Wilde the strain has been well reintroduced. “During the last years there were hardly any innovations when it comes to cucumbers. But this Wild Cucumber with its distinctive taste, course, crocodile-like skin and dark green color will change that. The vegetable flesh of the Wild Cucumber is substantial and tasty, even when stir-fried. The taste of the past in a new coat.”
The organic Wild Cucumbers are cultivated in the Netherlands by Fons Verbeek from Velden from April until November, and Eosta has a year-round supply of this specialty due to Spanish cultivation. They can be delivered with or without the wrapper. “The market reacted well. We get demand both from supermarkets and organic food shops. The beautiful wrapper gives the cucumber a premium look.”
