Italy: New Melissa strawberry cultivar

Nova Siri Genetics, a company researching new varieties, has patented a new strawberry cultivar named Melissa.

"We started working on the genetic improvement of strawberries in 2006 with two Spanish partners. Then, in 2010, we established Nova Siri Genetics and have patented 5 varieties since. Melissa is the result of 10 years of hard work," explains geneticist Nicola Tufaro.

The cultivar has been obtained with classic genetic improvement methods (no GMOs) at Nova Siri's experimental centre.

Nicola Tufaro.

"The objective is to obtain rustic vegetable material that can adapt to different environments and low-impact cultivation techniques."

Melissa is a rustic early variety suitable for non-fumigated soils and integrated organic cultivation. It has excellent organoleptic qualities and a long shelf-life. Fruit has medium-high grades and a red-orange colour and the flesh is firm and very aromatic.

Melissa is being produced in various areas in Italy and Spain such as the Caserta, Sele plain, Metaponto and Huelva areas.
