Silvestrelli (Rijk Zwaan)

Europe: Huge change for the fresh-cut sector

Rijk Zwaan worked on it for 10 years, developing an assessment test to identify a specific genetic trait to improve lettuce varieties, which was then included in various cultivars.

We are talking about the process that led to the development of KNOX, a genetic trait that keeps lettuce leaves fresh for longer, perfect for the fresh-cut industry. KNOX delays the oxidation and reddening of leaves, extending the shelf-life by two days.

Results were confirmed by various lab tests and trials.

Benefits for all

FreshPlaza talked to Alessandro Silvestrelli (Country Manager of Rijk Zwaan Italia) during Fruit Logistica 2016. "We are about to witness a huge change in the fresh-cut sector. We will no longer need modified customers and there will be less waste. KNOX will contribute to increasing the sales of fresh-cut salad."

The genetic trait was transferred to various cultivars. At the moment, Rijk Zwaan Italia is testing butterhead lettuce, which will become available in August 2016. "We are also ready to apply for next year's Fruit Logistica FLIA!"

Paride Zamagna, Manager Industry, Organic & Flavour of Rijk Zwaan Italia, commented with a metaphor: "it's just like when you go scuba diving for the first time - a new world opens up in front of you. This is what KNOX will be for the fresh-cut sector."
