Germany: Low demand for vegetables, citrus fruit sells better

During the winter the demand for citrus fruit is normally high, this year is no different. “The cooler temperature has given the trade a boost,” states Mustafa Aksoy, Junior Manager of Marlene Meya in Dortmund, “Currently the demand for vegetables is low. It has become very quiet.”

The trade at the wholesale markets is slow. “I already heard that from other wholesale markets in the region,” states the expert, “The weather plays an important part. Cooler temperatures of course have a negative effect on our business.”

Clementines from Morocco and Israel
"Traditionally the clementines and oranges come from Spain – ours too," says the Junior Managing director, "But at the moment we are also selling clementines from Morocco or Israel."

“The flavor of the fruit from Israel is outstanding, very tasty and sweet,” tells Aksoy, “We get the variety OR from Israel.” The clementine varieties OR and ORRI are easy to peel and are usually seedless, and they have a special taste.

In Morocco the Nadorcott variety is in season. “The variety Nadorcott is in high demand,” states the wholesaler, “They taste very nice and are sweet and juicy.” Every three or four weeks the varieties change.
