Interview with the largest greenhouse constructor in China:

Asia: Beijing Kingpeng leads China's emergence in the greenhouse industry

With roots that go back almost sixty years, Beijing Kingpeng, in one form or another, has been working with greenhouses for a long time. But it was only a decade ago that they branched off from the government entity where they got their start - and which still owns a large share of the company – to focus on high-tech greenhouses. Now they're at a forefront of a movement that seeks to put China on par with the European heavyweights of the greenhouse industry.

“Chinese companies can now do the same or similar things that foreign greenhouse manufacturers used to do here,” said Ray Yang, export manager for Beijing Kingpeng. “There were a lot of European companies meeting the demand for greenhouses and horticultural technique here, but nowadays it is harder for them to enter the market because it's not that competitive with the local companies.” Beijing Kingpeng has been one of the leading companies in the burgeoning Chinese greenhouse industry, and as the biggest manufacturer in the country, they now export their technology to over 30 countries around the world. For Yang, a big reason behind their growth has been an investment in technology and a collaborative philosophy.

“The most important thing you can provide to a customer is to show them how to maximize production,” said Yang. “So we collaborate with lots of international companies to focus on this aspect.”

Their research facility in Beijing is a testament to that spirit of collaborative technological innovation, with ideas and technology adapted from the leading greenhouse manufacturers in the Netherlands. Yang noted that the facility was built three years ago and required a large investment, but one which they found necessary in order to grow as a leading company. In fact, he noted that they're now a year-deep into plans for a demo greenhouse in which they can show the world the latest greenhouse technology China has to offer.

Ray Yang from Beijng Kingpeng at Horti Asia 2013, Bangkok.

“We want to collaborate with companies to research and test the latest ideas,” said Yang. “We want to make it so that when people come here we can show them not just the best greenhouse technology in China, but the best technology from around the world.”

Beijing Kingpeng has around 200 employees working on projects in horticulture in domestic regions and outside China. "The last years we have realized a lot of hectares of modern glass greenhouses in China and around the world, with more and more focus of real production greenhouse, we have completed really nice projects that consisted the latest technologies, like inside and outside shading, screening techniques, automated irrigation, internal transport and so on. Other parts of the world noted our projects on these regions, and nowadays we are active in a lot of markets, both neighboring and overseas countries."

A big part of the materials used in the projects are made by Beijing Kingpeng owns factory's. "All of the steel and aluminum parts are deigned and manufactured at our own factory's," said Yang. "Other parts we get supplied from leading companies in the industry, and the quality could be fully guaranteed."

"We truly believe in cooperation with the right partners. Why should we invent the same materials or techniques twice? In the end it will be all about working together. We do not see other companies as our competitors, but more as our partners that are all in the industry with the same goal: helping growers to harvest quality and high yields against the lowest input of energy and water, but with the highest amount of environmental consciousness!"
