Europe: Hail, thunderstorms destroy greenhouses

Hailstones as large as pingpong balls and eggs, have resulted in serious damage to a large number of greenhouses in Holland and Belgium last weekend. Hail, thunder and lightning strikes caused severe problems for greenhouse growers; thousands of glass panes were broken all over the country.

Most of the damage took place at ornamental growers, but also a number of vegetable growers were affected. A Belgian lettuce grower saw his entire business destroyed; the grower is not even sure if he will rebuild the company.

The damage is estimated at millions of euros. At one Dutch orchid grower approximately 12,000 windows were destroyed.
