"72-722 is another of our varieties with potential," said Ben Zwinkels, coordinator tomato crop at Rijk Zwaan. This variety has a flat truss, beautiful fruit colour and is early in production. Next year will see the first external trials; expectations are already high.
Last year Rijk Zwaan introduced a new concept for tomatoes: Internal Red. The fruit of tomatoes in the Internal Red range have a nice dark red colour which penetrates to the core of the fruit. The special characteristics of these varieties have been confirmed by consumer research conducted by Rijk Zwaan: more than 60% of respondents identified the internal fruit colour as distinctive. A frequently heard comment is that the fruits have a traditional character and look "like a tomato really should look." The Internal Red concept will be further rolled out by Rijk Zwaan. Ben Zwinkels: “There are now three varieties ready to investigate further, " 72-720 , 72-245 and 72-246."
There is also a lot of interest in the variety Siranzo, especially from our international partners. There seems to be a renewed interest in a deep red tomato
The snack variety 72-190 is very productive and has a good taste .
Rijk Zwaan is busy experimenting with new colours and shapes.
Rijk Zwaan’s demotrial in Kwintsheul has over 80 varieties that are evaluated under commercial conditions. This includes extensive recording of quality, taste and production. It is possible to arrange a visit to this demotrial; on request an Account Manager from Rijk Zwaan can be available to guide you through the crop in the greenhouse as well as spending some time assessing, tasting and discussing the harvested product.
