TwinHook prevents splitting in topped tomato plants

Topped tomato plants carry the risk of stem splitting. Due to the weight of the growing side shoots the stem may split at the node. This leads to unnecessary growth reduction and commercially it can amount to hundreds of plants per hectare being damaged by stem splitting.

A solution is the TwinHook by ARaymond. This is a ‘twinclip’ made of polypropylene that provides the node with the exact support it needs to prevent damage. Due to the TwinHook’s clever design it is quick and easy to attach. Growers are recommended to apply the TwinHook within one month after planting.

Labour saving

In practise, growers have already invented solutions to prevent stem splitting. They have attempted to provide the plant with extra support by twisting two clips together. However, this is very arduous and labour intensive. The TwinHook was developed at the request of growers. The need for extra support depends on the variety; some varieties always produce heavier plants or are weaker by nature and therefore are more susceptible to splitting. Also it seems that splitting is more likely to occur under artificial lighting.

The TwinHook by ARaymond is available from Royal Brinkman:
