De Ruiter's DR1398TH

"Mildew resistant, tasty and above all no yellow crowns"

Good production, a beautiful red color, great flavor, mildew resistance and above all: no yellow crowns. It’s wishes like these, put forward by growers and traders, that resulted in the new mid-vine tomato by De Ruiter. The DR1398TH was presented last month.

The new DR1398TH

The DR1398TH is currently trialed at 15 locations, involving both conventional and LED lighting. In the IDC Demo Centre, about 1,000 meters of greenhouse is allocated to the latest mid-vine tomato by De Ruiter. The novelty was shown to a group of tomato growers. This month, the variety will be officially cultivated commercially. Also, its real name will be revealed, as "DR1398TH" doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.

Arjan van Bimmel introduces the new variety

Mildew resistant
With the new tomato, De Ruiter launches a competitor for the standard variety, their own Tourance. "We expect that the demand for mid-vine is going to rise," says Nico van Vliet of De Ruiter. "And with the DR1398TH, we now have a very flexible variety. Production is sound, it is available all year round, and it’s doing very well under additional light." But equally important is the mildew resistance, which distinguishes the new variety from Tourance. "The new tomato is IR resistant to mildew. In the experiments we see that it is no problem whatsoever."

Venues
De Ruiter has embarked on a new course in the development of varieties. Central is not only the producer's desire, but also the demands of the trade venues. It's not just about high output figures and resistance, but also about how traders and consumers judge de variety: the color, taste, shape and strength against yellow crowns for example.
