Christian Zeiler, Red Tomatoes Produktions GmbH:

7.8 ha. tomato glasshouse in the shadow of Austrian airfield

On the initiative of Austrian tomato grower, Christian Zeiler, the business Red Tomatoes Produktions GmbH was started in March 2015. This business is currently developing a 7.8 ha glasshouse in Margarethen am Moos, in the shadow of Wenen airfield.

Looije Agro Technics designed the glasshouse and the division of the business. Although it was short notice to make the drawings and apply for planning, Looije Agro Technics, together with Zeiler and a few local businesses, decided to push the project through in order to finish it this year. Immediately after the purchase of the land and approval from the local authorities, the project was started.

What is special about this project is that the whole glasshouse will be provided with assimilation lights with a lighting capacity of about 225 mmol, which converts to about 17.000 Lux. This will be combined with the installation of a climate system. Zeiler has chosen the Air & Energy system from Maurice/Ammerlaan. With this system, hte warmth from the assimilation lights can be used for the heating of the glasshouse.

In addition to this, the residual heat from the nearby biogas unit will also supply the CO2 required. Zieler and Looije Agro Technics are expecting lower heating costs and by way of green energy and a low CO2 wastage, to be able to produce high quality tomatoes in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way.

On 22 April, Havecon received the assignment of building the glasshouse. According to the planning, Alweco will start installing the horizontal and vertical screen installations in week 30. The heating system is being provided by Bom Group, who have already managed to build a buffertank at amazing speed. Crone was the subcontractor for this.

Shortly, work will start on the warehouse, the social area, the assimilation lighting and water and electro technical installations.

Partly thanks to the tight planning and good organisation of Looije Agro Technics as well as the hard work and assistance of the relevant suppliers and installers, Zeiler hopes to be able to start planting in this unique project in week 41.
