Italy: Colle d'Oro is the first with tunnel watermelons

Colle d'Oro started its watermelon campaign on May 2nd. "Despite the difficult winter, we managed to follow our schedule," explained Salvatore Calabrese, who runs the company together with siblings Carmelo and Loredana and brother-in-law Tony Solarino.

"Thanks to the use of non-grafted plants and to the weather and soil characteristics of the Ispica territory, we manage to produce excellent quality fruit earlier than Greece, Spain and the Latina area."

80% of the produce is sold loose to wholesalers, whereas the remaining 20% in packed in cardboard bins and goes to Northern Europe.

"In such a delicate moment like this one, high-quality early fruit manage to reach satisfactory prices even for producers."

The PO is one of the leading in the region for what concerns environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility. It is promoting its value also marketing-wise - from its relationship with the territory, to the selection of the best varieties available on the market and to the safety of its products and workers.
