Video: How Demers Greenhouse is heated during Quebec's harsh winters

This video takes you on a tour inside the Boiler Room of Demers Greenhouse, viewing the backup Landfill Gas Boiler and the Thermal Transport Pumping System which was integrated with the Greenhouse Hot Water Heating System.

The pumps draw hot water from the bottom of the greenhouse's 2 million litre hot water storage tank (at a temperature range of 40 - 45°C), which is circulated up to the main greenhouse heat exchanger (HX-6) located 900 meters away inside Waste Management's 8 MWe Landfill Gas Renewable Energy Plant. The heated greenhouse water then exits HX-6 (at a temperature range of 80 - 90°C) returning back to the greenhouse, discharging into the top of the storage tank.





Vito Casola, P.Eng., President at POWER GENySYS, was responsible for the complete conceptual and detailed Engineering, design/drafting, equipment procurement, project and construction management/supervision, and commissioning for integrating heat recovery equipment at Waste Management's 8 MWe Landfill Gas Renewable Energy Plant in Drummondville, Quebec.

The project included the recovery of 8.4 MW of thermal energy from the power plant (in the form of 190°F hot water) all transferred to the heating system of a new 3.2 hectare greenhouse (via a 1.8 km district heating pipe loop) and integrated with its' 2 million litre hot water storage tank.
