Belgian grower cuts heating costs and reduces emissions with new CHP

In 2011, Cummins Energy Solution Business (ESB) installed a combined heat and power solution for Desmet Krist, a Belgian Grower who needed a solution for their tomato-growing operation in the Ardooie region of the country. Positive feedback from other growers who are existing Cummins customers encouraged Desmet to become an Energy Service Contract customer itself.

After listening to Desmet’s needs, Cummins ESB installed a power system that operates above 90 percent overall energy efficiency, reducing Desmet’s costs and aligning with government regulations that grant CHP certificates and CO2 emission permits. The project exceeded Desmet’s expectations and they have since expanded the project to include additional generator sets from Cummins Power Generation.

The expansion incorporated a Cummins Power Generation C2000 N5C generator set with a Cummins QSV91 engine, equipped with selective catalytic reduction, exhaust heat exchanger and condenser, resulting in an output of 2,800 kWth. The combined heat and CO2 installation was set up as a Build-Own-Operate project, a format that has proven attractive to a number of Belgian customers thanks to Cummins’ expertise and reduced risk. The contract for the project expansion was signed in August 2014, the installation started in November, and the system was commissioned and in production one month later.

“The customer saw the difference between the existing installation and the new build straight away,” says Project and Engineering Manager Stefan De Wit. Thierry Baillot, Business Development Manager, highlights the importance of the Cummins global support network to the customer, saying, “Thanks to a better approach between project management and aftersales, the follow-up is actually better than before, and our response in the case of a fault is even quicker.” This gave Desmet the peace of mind that Cummins was on hand with capabilities and expertise to support their on-going needs.

Desmet was looking for an energy-saving solution that could cut heating costs and reduce emissions without impacting on cash-flow and without having to incur the cost of installation and operation. Cummins ESB North Europe delivered the solution, and Desmet has become the latest Belgian customer to experience the value of an Energy Service Contract. An Energy Service Contract provides an all-in solution, meaning customers have only one point of contact, which reduces inefficiencies across all aspects of the project.

The contract takes all responsibilities beyond basic infrastructure away from the customer; Cummins takes care of sizing, design, installation, operation and maintenance of the cogeneration plant.

Further development of the site is a possibility; Desmet has land available for expansion, and may do so in 2019.
