Tomato grower Sergey Klokonos, Azerbaijan:

"I think this will be our best season ever."

Azerbaijani grower Sergey Klokonos is the proud owner of a modern glasshouse of three hectares near Baku. The greenhouse company cultivates tomatoes on the vine and is in the middle of production. "Despite of the cold weather and less sun radiation, we are experiencing a good season so far", Klokonos said. "I think this will be our best season ever."

As a reason for the good production at Klokonos greenhouse, the grower claims to have found a better growing media. "We recently switched to coir substrate from Brown Coir, this manufacturer has designed a special mix for our type of cultivation on this specific climatic region. We now are growing in their Brown Grow slabs; they provide us a substrate with perfect water holding capacity. We have less problems with root diseases and virusses", the grower said. "This also saved us in our fertilzer and pesticide costs; they have decreased by 5-10 %.

"Thanks to the hydroponic coir substrate we are able to perfectly steer our plants, we have more control over the vegetative and generative growth habit of the crops. Their is also more ventilation of air in the roots. We are targetting a beter and higher production this year.

Klokonos markets its vegetables to the local markets. He concluded that there is a rising demand for high quality greenhouse grown vegetables in Azerbaijan. "We expect to increase our business in the future."
