Turkey: Growing tomatoes in Diyadin at -35 degrees Celsius

In the cold Diyadin region in the east of Turkey , a new state of art plastic greenhouse of 2 hectares is currently producing high quality vine tomatoes. The greenhouse, built by Turkish greenhouse builder Nassan, catches a lot attention, as it claims to be the first greenhouse in this area that is producing year round. Quite an achievement if you realize that the winter temperatures in this region can get as low as -35 degrees Celsius.

A 3.5 million USD investment was made to the greenhouse, it was realized by SERKA development agencies. According to local sources, this is just the first 2 hectare pilot project, if everything goes well, further investments will be made as well.

The greenhouse was built by Nassan Greenhouses, the supplies came from Benimplast Riococo

The greenhouse produces very efficiently with the help of geothermal energy. This allows the greenhouse to be heated year round and protect the structure from heavy snow loads that can occur in the Diyadin region. Sometimes the snow in the area reaches 1 meter in height.

The vegetables produced in the greenhouse are marketed to countries such as Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Georgia.
