Israeli hydroponic lettuce with crispy leaves grows without pesticides

Hishtil Nurseries have developed lettuce seedlings that are suitable for growing on water. The seedlings grow on a bed of foam plastic, floating on water. In this setup the plants don’t have to exert an effort to shoot roots into the ground, and so each plant is able to invest more energy and resources in growing its leaves. As a result, the lettuce contains a greater amount of minerals and forms a unique, crispy texture.

The hydroponic plant grows detached from the ground, and raised in a closed environment, which is less exposed to infections, reducing the need for pesticides.

As a side benefit, there is no loss of fertilizer after the irrigation seeps into the ground water, and they remain uncontaminated.
