Yaron Giras, Hazera:

"Success of Olivia determined by both growers and retailers"

If you have recently visited mid tech tomato growers in Mexico, you might have noticed that Hazera's grape tomato Olivia is a popular variety amongst them. According to Yaron Giras Tomato Product Global Manager of seed breeder Hazera, the variety is favoured by many growers due to the fact that the crop is very adaptable to many different climates.

Olivia is a snacking / mini plum grape tomato with a very consistent fruit quality. "It is a tomato that is popular amongst retailers due to the consistent shape and size and crunchy bite. Olivia maintains high sugar levels and a great presentation, even 2-3 weeks after picking. The brix is between 8-9, which makes the variety extremely suitable to market as a quick snack", said Yaron Giras

But the variety is not only favoured by retailers and other parties in the fresh produce chain. "The key success of Olivia is also determined by the growers that are very fond of the variety as well", Yaron said.

He stressed that Olivia is a crop with a lot of vigor and strength to produce early, but at the same time it lasts a long time. Its vigor gives it a long growing season, producing anywhere from 14 to 25 trusses. "The variety has a lot of potential to produce high yields, compared to the standard varieties offered in this segment, the yield can be 10-20% higher."

With resistance to Fusarium race 3, Fusarium Crown Rot, and nematodes, among standard resistances, Olivia eliminates the need for grafting and reduces the requirement for plant protection materials.

Yaron pointed out that the variety is very adaptable to any climate; Olivia can be grown in each region in North America, cold, warm, dark or extremely light areas. "This makes the variety favoured by both growers and retailers; it is a variety that can be grown year round in any region, so the consumers will be able to enjoy the benefits of the consistent shelf life, tasty and quality fruits any time of the year."
