Holland: 50 hectares to be heated with new geothermal well

And more Dutch growers will go on geothermal heat: The project Aardwarmte Vierpolders will proceed. It is expected that by the end of this year, the first ten companies will be connected to the new geothermal well. In total, more than fifty hectares of greenhouses are to be connected to geothermal energy.

A local TV station visited Vierpolders. See the report here.

Last week, the neighbourhood was informed about the plans to pump up hot water from a depth of 2.3 kilometres. The reactions were positive, says project leader Paul Grootscholten (Globe Plant). "We had a few questions, but all seem to have worked out." That's not surprising: Grootscholten himself has been working on the project for eight years, and he knows all the ins and outs. The drilling is further supported by AAB (formerly Agro Adviesburo) and HYDRECO GeoMec

The planned network (enlargement)

Ten nurseries
Ten cultivation locations (with a total acreage of over 50 hectares) are connected to the well. The heat goes, first of all, to plant nursery Globe Plant. In addition, six tomato growers (Vitensa, Kwekerij Noordermeer, Kwekerij Voort Brielle, Kwekerij Young Grow, Gebroeders Noordermeer, Kwekerij Nederpelt), an eggplant nursery (Kwekerij Tabos) and a potted plant nursery (Island Plant) will be hooked up. The companies are quite far apart, as can be seen on the map, and the network will span 7.2 kilometres in total.

Planning

This spring, the drilling site is being constructed, and in June the drilling will commence in earnest. That will take about three months. At the end of 2015, the first companies are to be connected to the network. Expansion of the planned network isn’t on anyone’s mind just yet. "Getting a bunch of growers to agree on something was hard enough already," Grootscholten laughs. "We first want to ensure that we have everything right. We're certainly not going to rush anything."
