Koppert celebrates the Year of the soil:

"Stronger roots yield a more resilient plant"

Koppert Biological Systems from Berkel en Rodenrijs exists nearly 50 years. Peter Maes himself can look back on 17 beautiful and interesting years.

Peter Maes has been with Koppert for 17 years

Soil
10 years ago, Koppert Biological Systems, manufacturer of natural crop protection, microorganisms and natural pollinators, introduced Trianum, a useful fungus against soil diseases. Through the introduction, the interest was aroused to further explore the soil. As the root system of the plant was slowly unraveled, the plant system was increasingly well understood. Peter: "It became clear very early on that stronger roots yield a more resilient plant, one less susceptible to disease. This foray into soil life really did wonders for our product range and the kind of assistance we were able to offer people in the industry.”

Expansion
Koppert Biological Systems used to offer only products for the greenhouse vegetable industry. Today, that range has been impressively expanded to include products for floriculture, the fruit sector, field vegetable crops and large-scale agriculture. The firm is also increasingly involved with nutrient uptake, soil health and crop resilience. "All to reduce the use of fertilizers and chemical crop protection," says Peter.

New slogan: Partners with Nature

Year of the soil
Among other things, Koppert aims to reduce stress for the plant and thereby to improve revenues. "Awareness is growing that chemical crop protection and fertilizers are no longer the only solution. The fact that the FAO has declared a "Year of the Soil”, says a lot. We can’t keep depleting the soil with tools and CMO -varieties. In areas such as the Middle East and Africa, which were the first to feel the climate change, they are increasingly open to our solutions.”

Partners with Nature
Koppert wants to let nature take its course, which is evident by their newly appointed mission: Partners with Nature. By being able to make a contribution to plant health, Koppert makes a contribution to human health. Peter Maes finds it remarkable how quickly this statement is embraced by colleagues and the market. Together with nature, Koppert wants to see the agricultural sector healthier, safer and more productive.
