"Better quality tomatoes at Spanish discounters"

Last February, Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds, with its Belgian and Dutch Intense growers, visited the world's largest covered vegetable production area: Almeria, Spain.

A varied program by the Spanish Nunhems Sales Specialists led the delegation along several Intense growers and Intense marketing cooperatives such as Vicasol, Casi and Agrasa. The various new trial varieties, as well as Nunhems' commercial varieties in other segments, were carefully reviewed and discussed with the Spanish growers.

In the evening, retailers like Alcampo, Eroski, El Corte Ingles and Mercadonna were visited. The delegation experienced firsthand how Intense was positioned at these retailers. Striking difference with the Netherlands and Belgium is that the tomatoes are sold mainly unpacked. It was also noticed that the retailers sold better quality tomatoes.

Culinary highlight of the trip was the Intense menu that was specially prepared by restaurant La Gruta. The various distinctive uses of Intense like gazpacho, pasta sauce, grilled tomato tapas were served to the participants.

Belgian and Dutch growers agreed to a more intense cooperation in the near future. The Produce Chain team of Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds will organize this objective.
