UK: Cost saving biodegradable twine now available at Ecolander

When removing the old high wire crops at the end of the season, the disposal costs for greenhouse crops are influenced by the presence of non organic materials like plastic clips, metal hooks and polypropelene twines. In order to grow more sustainably and decrease the disposal costs, bio degradable greenhouse twine has been developed. But due to the higher cost, not many growers are yet interested.

"Biodegradable greenhouse twine is known to be a more expensive product, that is why not many growers have accepted it yet", said Paul Willets of Ecolander. "They are aware of the reduction in disposal costs, but often they are not a fan of using biodegradable twine; it was too expensive or not strong enough. We wanted to change this by making a better and cheaper alternative available."

Recently, Ecolander introduced a less expensive biodegradable greenhouse twine in the UK. "This material is fully biodegradable and isn’t made from PLA. There are twines in various breaking strengths (load limit 200 N, 300 N and 400 N). It is still a bit more expensive than the regular polypropelene twine, but growers still can save costs on the disposal of the crops. However, it is logical that as more users choose this product, the price will become more interesting, on the basis of larger production quantities."

Biodegradable twine from Ecolander is available in any configuration and with free fall hooks. Please contact Paul Willets for more information.
