Womens Day: Rose growers suffer from situation Russia and Ukraine

This time of the year is a very busy period for rose growers. After Valentine's Day, which took place two weeks ago, the next important day is coming up; Womens Day at 8 march. This day is celebrated in many countries but is very popular in Russia and other Eastern European countries. However, due to the current financial situation in Russia and Ukraine, the prices are under pressure. This is explained by Rob Brussee, managing director of Van der Deijl Roses.

Rose farm in Ecuador.

Van der Deijl Roses, a Dutch based company with two rose farms in Ecuador and one in Ethiopia, recognized a decrease in price. "At our farm in Ecuador, the sales for Womens day closed yesterday. We noticed a drop in price of 15%, compared to last year" says Brussee. This is mainly caused by the current situation in Russia and Ukraine. "The Russians and Ukrainians are eager to buy flowers, but they have less to spend."

"For this reason, we are lucky that we export to many different countries", says Brussee. Even though, they still have to deal with other factors that affect their sales, like weather conditions. "Ecuador, for example, is known by its mild climate that ensures optimal cultivation conditions. However, the nights were very cold over the last months. Therefore, the production is lower than usual. The same counts for our farm in Ethiopia."
