Labels from space:

Germany: Galactical publicity stunt by Felga Etiketten

"We are a small company with 15 employees and all of a sudden every one knows us", says Philip Grimm, director of Felga Etiketten, a company that produces plastic labels. Last year, in the middle of August, Felga Etiketten sent their weather resistant label into space to show the quality of the product. "This fairly low-budget publicity stunt received more positive attention than expected." says Grimm.

A couple of years ago, after reading an article about British students who tried to accomplish stratospheric launches, Philip Grimm came up with the idea to launch one of his weather resistant labels into space to show the quality of his products. So, he contacted the students and asked them to support him with preparing and implementing the project. "Within three weeks, the entire project was planned and ready to be carried out."

During the trip, the weather resistant label was accompanied by a plant. "Initially, I wanted to use rhododendron, which is a local plant, but due to the extreme environmental circumstances (-60 ÂșC) this plant would not preserve its shape." Therefore a plant was used that could handle this extreme cold and pressure, namely a Hawothia Imifolia Sardinie Siesta.

A weather balloon, filled with helium, brought the label and plant to an altitude of 35 km. The balloon was equipped with a a parachute, a GPS, and two high-performance cameras. Thanks to the parachute, the plant and label landed safely and the exact location could be determined by the GPS signal. The two cameras recorded the entire 90 minute trip of which they made this 3 minute video:

"At first, I was a bit hesitant if our customers would appreciate this action, but I received and still receive a lot of positive attention and reactions. Even now, six months after the publicity stunt, people still talk about it and ask me if the stunt was real. Some people still think it was photo shopped", says Grimm.

With this stunt, Felga Etiketten is nominated for the Taspo Awards 2015 in the category of Marketing.
