Robert Wu, Oboya:

Trends in flower packaging differ from region to region

Plastic sleeves to wrap cut or pot flowers are well-known items for the growers and which enables them to make there ornamental products even more attractive. Next to the appearance of the sleeve, the material is becoming increasingly important. According to Robert Wu from Oboya, a company for horticultural supplies, major trends can be noticed in ornamental packaging and especially regarding the material that is used for the sleeves.

Ornamental Packaging is very important and are key elements in the retail. "Trends can be noticed all over the world, but the advanced economies are leading the trends and developments, especially Eastern Europe, the US and Japan", explains Robert. In general, the colors, trends and the combination of materials are similar. However, due to sensitivity in pricing, the use of materials may vary per country. "Thickness of material and material treatments can vary a lot in a different market".

“Natural materials reflecting environmental concerns are still embraced by large multinational retailers and some high-end florist specialists”, says Wu. Therefore, the industry is exploring and developing new materials and new ways of packaging products. Paper, PLA and other types of biodegradable materials and various combination materials are currently being used. According to Wu, this movement will not stop or change as fashions do: "I say it will remain in the market for many years and will continue to develop".
