Ontario greenhouse growers have just beguntheir winter cucumber program and it seems acreage in production for this timeof year has increased. “The season isjust beginning,” explains George Gilvesy, General Manager of Ontario GreenhouseVegetable Growers, “and on a positive note, we have received enhanced interestfrom local Ontario retailers and export buyers form the U.S.A.”
The current market has been reflective ofthe supply of principally Mexican grown cucumbers until such time that lightlevels increase to allow for higher production out of Ontario. “While recentcucumber prices have been buoyant with supply short falling demand, weanticipate that when supply increases, the market will adjust accordingly” headded.
“While the markets for English cucumberscontinue to be competitive, Ontario greenhouse growers will strive to keepproducing the best quality at competitive prices for consumers’ needs” heconcluded.
