Flier Systems:

Canada: Intelligent automation at Ontario Plants Propagation Ltd

Growing production and increasing labour costs were the impetus behind Ontario Plants moving from a manual to an automated situation. In 2011, a grading line for young plants was installed and a year later the choice fell on a Wetting line for rockwool blocks.

Ontario Plants Propagation Ltd. is a producer of grafted fruit vegetable plants in North/East America.

The optimum start

Flier Systems supplies automated solutions for the propagation of crops in rockwool, right from the moment of seeding. With the advanced Drum seeder DS11, all kinds of (raw) seed can be precision-sown in rockwool blocks. This seeding machine can be used stand-alone as well as in a machine line.

Free of all operations

Rockwool blocks are a widely used propagation medium for vegetable plants. But various operations are needed before the plants can go into the greenhouse. Significant savings can be made on labour by automating some of these operations.

Flier Systems provides solutions for virtually all operations which are involved in this process. With the rockwool de-stacker, rockwool blocks are de-stacked without manual intervention and transported further to the next operation. This de-stacker can be made just as advanced as you like, from the automated supply and dispatch of pallets to removing the cardboard.

Wetting

Wetting the rockwool blocks is an extremely important part of the propagation process. To create an ideal start, the 3-step water supply system ensures that the blocks are optimally saturated. At this stage fertilized water can be applied and afterwards the blocks can be rinsed with clean water. The water is subsequently recycled so that no water is wasted.

After saturation, the plants can be planted straight away on the conveyer belt. After that there is the option of applying a stick to each block using a stick applicator machine, so that this doesn't need to be done later in the greenhouse.

Ontario Plants Propagation Ltd.

The implementation of automation in a non-automated environment always presents a challenge. So a first step on the way to automation must not be too big. Ontario Plants was looking for an affordable, simple solution, and so opted for the 2 solutions of Flier Systems. Tim Vanderkooy, production manager at Ontario Plants: ”We have seen many Flier products in other propagation so that also gives us confidence that the unit is proven. Also my experience with Ad Kranendonk in sales is very positive. This helps to feel good about who you work with on implementing new products into your company.”

Besides the savings on labour costs of nearly 50%, this automation at Ontario Plants delivered improved plant quality, uniformity and increased capacity.
