Application of LED technology in horticulture is only expected grow

2014 has been a good year for the Texas-based firm Illumitex, which specialises in LED design and installations. Dennis Riling and Tim Sulzer, of the sales team, affirm that “over the past three or four months there’s been an increase in demand from vertical farms looking to install LED technology.”

The main reason for this, according to Dennis and Tim, is “most likely the publishing of the results achieved by vertical farms using LED lights, which have been great.” They also say that “the vertical industry in general has been expanding quite rapidly in the U.S., and that’s another factor.”

Two of the Illumitex’s main clients in 2014 have been Green Spirit Farms and FarmedHere, with the company actually in the process of commissioning more lights for both companies. Dennis and Tim state that “we like to provide our customers with complete solutions tailored to their lighting needs. Based on their individual parameters, we provide them with the ideal amount and type of light that their plants need.”

For instance, for leafy greens, herbs and different lettuce varieties, the most widely-used spectrum is the F3, and as for luminaires, the ideal fixture in vertical farms is usually the Eclipse. Dennis and Tim explain that “this is because they have the smallest profile, and when it comes to vertical farms, height is very important, so we try to get the lights as close to the plant as possible.”

The main advantage of Illumitex’s lights is that, because they are individually designed, they offer plenty of flexibility. “Depending on the fixture and on the particular crop, we can have the lights at the ideal height for the plants and can include dimming capabilities,” they explain. “We also help the customer figure out what the right light level needs to be.”

When it comes to future development, Tim and Dennis highlight the great quality and expertise of the team behind them, allowing them to produce the best technology possible. “We are constantly looking to improve, so Illumitex will continue to innovate, and with medicinal cannabis we are already seeing great yields and growth rates with our solutions.”

The company also expects the trend set over the past few months to continue. “We definitely think interest is expanding, especially as more research is being done with results from people already using our lights, revealing that LEDs ensure higher yields with lower energy costs. That is one of the big issues, that a lot about LED is still unknown by our customers, so we only expect growth from this point,” conclude Dennis and Tim.
