Opportunities to establish greenhouses in Kyrgyzstan

Nowadays the majority of the vegetables are cultivated on the fields in Kyrgyzstan. Vegetable prices are low in the summer period and high in the winter period, because of the import costs. In order to reduce these large price differences vegetables need to be cultivated all year round in Kyrgyzstan. Besides that, Kyrgyzstan joined the Eurasian Custom Union this month. “All in all, this offers great opportunities for growers to establish greenhouses in Kyrgyzstan” says Abdykerimov Eldiar, who is looking for greenhouse suppliers.

"The summer months, are beneficial for the vegetable cultivation, but during the winter months no vegetables come from the field.", says Eldiar. During these winter months, from November up to May, vegetables will be imported from Uzbekistan and China. Consequently, the vegetable prices are higher than during the summer months, when the vegetables are supplied from the fields of Kyrgyzstan."During these eight months the wholesale price for 1 kilo of cucumbers is between 100 and 110 som (110 som is 1.90 USD). The retail price of tomatoes and cucumbers are between 130 (2.20 USD) and 140 som" explains Eldiar.

Currently, some greenhouses are established near the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, to supply vegetables all year round. However, in order to supply the entire population in the region of Bishkek and maybe also cites in Russia, more greenhouses need to be built. According to Eldiar, the circumstances to cultivate greenhouse vegetables like cucumber, tomato, pepper, mushrooms and maybe even flowers are good in Kyrgyzstan. “Energy and labour costs are low. Additionally, the climate is beneficial for greenhouse cultivation; the temperature lies between +17 °C and +30 °C. In the winter months, however, the temperatures lie between -2 °C and -18 °C degrees celcius. Therefore, additional heating is required in these winter months, but due to the low energy costs this will not be an obstacle”. An additional advantage is their membership in the Eurasian Custom Union, that consist of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Russia. This enables the country to export products without paying taxes to member states.

These increasing possibilities were recognized by a local businessman who established a professional greenhouse in Bishkek. This successful 1,800 sized greenhouse grows 4,600 cucumber seedlings.

In order to enable local growers to make use of these advantages and to establish greenhouses, Eldiar is looking for professional greenhouse suppliers.
